The Video Setup menu in the High Definition Guide exists so that you can modify the resolution and aspect ratio of the picture being sent from the cable box to your television. Adjusting these settings to align with the optimal settings of your television will greatly improve your viewing experience. You can review the following video, or check out the information below for a full explanation.

How to access Video Setup

To modify the Video Setup settings you must navigate to the settings menu. To do this:

  1. Choose the MENU button on your Shaw Remote, and then
  2. Choose the Settings icon from the menu that appears. Lastly,
  3. Choose the Video Setup option from the list of available settings presented on the left side of the screen (pictured below).

TV Resolution settings

Once you have selected the Video Resolution menu from the top of the screen, you can match the output of the box with the maximum resolution of your television. Choices include:

  • 720
  • 1080i
  • 1080p/1080

The 1080p/1080i setting will enable your digital box to automatically swap between both formats, depending on the resolution of the actual content being broadcasted (either 1080p or 1080i).

Please consult your television's user manual to determine which format will be best for your setup. Once you have determined this, simply use the up, down, left and right ARROW keys on your Shaw Remote to choose your preferred option, and then hit the OK button on the remote to confirm your selection.

Aspect Ratio settings

The Aspect Ratio settings will allow you to change the way that standard definition content is formatted to fit your television screen. By default, your digital box will be set for Normal which will cause black bars to appear on either side of the image so that it retains its native 4:3 viewing ratio. This setting will provide you the clearest picture quality and prevent any stretching, but it also means that the image will not fill the entire screen as the content was created before the proliferation of widescreen televisions.

The second option is to stretch the picture. The Stretch option will cause your standard definition picture to be stretched from a 4:3 format into a 16:9 format. This means that the picture will fit your entire television screen, but it will be stretched horizontally in order to do so. Images may appear distorted when this aspect ratio is selected.

The final aspect ratio option is the Zoom setting. With this option selected the digital box will magnify the image at its center so that it will fill the entire screen without becoming distorted. However, in order to fill the screen with no distortion, the video will be cut off on the top and the sides and you will not be able to see the entire image (see below).
