A spread sheet file which stores your contacts' information for use on your email account. CSV files allow you to import or export your contact list from one source to another (e.g. from Shaw Webmail to Outlook Express).
Domain Name System
Used to organize the distributed naming system for computers and other resources connected to the Internet. One example of how your computer uses the DNS is when you type http://www.google.ca into the address bar of your Browser. Instead of having to type in the actual IP Address of Google to view the page (e.g. 188.8.131.52), the DNS is what allows you to type in a simple URL, such as google.ca and still arrive at the Google page.
The activity of transferring a file, document or piece of information from a remote computer to your own personal computer.
Synonyms: E-Bill, Electronic Bill, Paperless Billing
Allows you to receive your Shaw bill directly to a preferred email address as opposed to receiving it as a paper bill through the mail.

Message or messages which are transferred from one individual to another over the Internet through an email program, such as Shaw Webmail.

A computer program which is used to download and display a user's email messages. Once emails are downloaded they are stored locally on the user’s computer.
The act of copying a file, list, or group of items from one location so that it can later be “uploaded’ or added to another location.
Software included in most antivirus programs which protect the computer from malicious viruses and spyware. The firewall is a virtual wall which limits other users and programs from accessing private and key systems on your computer. A firewall is included as part of the Shaw Secure – Powered by McAfee program.
A space online in which users can talk and discuss various subjects. Often forums have a theme. The Shaw Community is a forum in which users can talk about their Shaw products, and ask questions to other community members and Shaw employees.

A unit of measurement that can be applied to Internet data usage and the size of a file. In Shaw terms, your Internet package will come with a set amount of included data available for use each month (e.g. 125 GB/Month).
A link that is located on a webpage or is included in a community forum comment which when clicked will lead the user to a separate webpage or resource. Hyperlinks are often identified by being bolded or printed in a contrasting colour. As an example, http://shaw.ca would be a hyperlink.
A small image which represents a program, file or other document located on your computer. Often you are able to click on these icons to launch the program associated with it.

The next phase in IP distribution. IPv6 allows more IP addresses to be provided by Internet Service Providers.

All computers and devices which are connected to the Internet must have a unique IP address. This number allows you to connect to the Web, and without an IP address you will not be able to perform any network activities.
A language used by computer applications. Java is used for various Shaw websites and services, such as Webmail. Java can be installed at http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp
Occurs when a process has temporarily slowed down, become staggered or is otherwise not operating smoothly. Lag can be a result of high latency or poor hardware performances and is often associated with video streaming and gaming on the computer.

A device which allows you to connect a computer into Shaw’s network. Shaw provides customers with both wired modems as well as wireless modems.
A collection of computers and other electronic devices which are connected to the Internet and share information and resources online.
Network Interface Card
Synonyms: NIC, Network Card
A piece of hardware which is either installed internally on your computer, or is connected to it externally which allows the computer to obtain an IP address and connect to the Internet.
Synonyms: Scam Email, Phishing Scam
Emails which are sent from an individual or organization in an attempt to obtain your personal information such as usernames, passwords or credit card details. Often these emails are sent in the guise that they are from a legitimate company, or a personal friend. They may also include links to fake websites and viruses.
Pin Hole Reset
Synonyms: Restore, Pin Hole Restore
A reset which will restore the device to its original factory default settings. Most Internet Modems and Digital Phone Terminals have a pin hole reset button located on the back of the unit. If performed, you may lose any custom settings you have applied – such as unique network names or passwords.
A test which allows you send a packet of information to a website to determine if you are able to communicate with the address, as well as the see the speed in which you are able to make this connection. This is helpful for determining if you are currently experiencing a high “ping time” which may indicate slow or delayed Internet speeds.

The act of unplugging an electronic device from its power supply for a short amount of time, than reconnecting it. This reset can be performed on Internet Modems, Digital Boxes and Digital Phone Terminals and will often resolve many issues relating to these devices.

A device which allows you to share your internet connection with multiple devices. Routers are either attached to a modem with an ethernet cable, or are built into the modem. The Shaw Wireless modem has the router components built into its' hardware so that it functions as both a modem (receives Internet signal) and router (distributes access to the Internet to multiple devices).
Synonyms: Safemode with Networking
A mode on your computer that allows only essential services to run, thus limiting the impact that software and viruses may have on your computer. This mode is often used in troubleshooting to rule out possible causes of various Internet and/or computer related issues.
A computer hardware system which stores information and can send it across a network. Examples of server types include mail servers, database servers and file servers.

A program provided by Shaw which protects your computer from malware, viruses and spyware infections. Shaw Secure is an full antivirus system powered by McAfee which also contains tools such as the Shredder and QuickClean tools.
Any unsolicited email which has been sent to your email address. Spam emails often include messages regarding various products and services, and are often related to scams.

Encrypts data that is being transmitted from one source to another. SSL can be applied to webpages as well as email clients.

A method of categorizing items so that they can be easily found for later use.
A group of comments which are created as a response to a question, document or post created in an Internet forum.
Synonyms: Malware, Spyware
A malicious program which can create, move or erase files on your computer with the purpose of causing your computer to stop functioning normally. Sometimes viruses can be related to an attempt to steal personal information from your computer. The most common way of getting viruses would be to open an email with an attachment which contains the virus.

Allows you to connect to your home network without needing to connect your computer or mobile device directly into the Shaw Modem with an ethernet cable.
