Sony Ericsson Xperia Play

 

This guide will explain how to connect your Sony Xperia Play phone to WiFi and also demonstrate how to setup your Shaw email account through IMAP or an Exchange server. Click on the links below to be redirected to the relevant instructions.

IMAP is a convenient way to setup your email and is recommended for users looking to check mail worldwide and from different computers/devices.

Preferred email setup: IMAP

IMAP allows you to keep your messages on the Shaw server in case you need to check your email via Webmail while away from your regular computer.
 
To configure your phone/tablet to send and receive emails using the IMAP protocol:

 

  1. Tap the Home icon
  2. Tap the Grid icon so you can view all installed applications
  3. Tap the Email icon
  4. Enter your Email Address and Password for the account you are setting up and tap Next
  5. Select the type of account: POP3, IMAP, Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync; Select IMAP.
  6. Enter the Incoming server settings:
    • Username: your Shaw email address, including @shaw.ca
    • Password: your Shaw email password
    • POP3 server: imap.shaw.ca
    • Port: 993
    • Security type: SSL - yes
    • Delete email from server:
  7. Tap Done, and then Next
  8. Enter the Outgoing server settings:
    • SMTP server: mail.shaw.ca
    • Port: 587
    • Security type: SSL
    • Require sign-in (checkbox): Yes or No (depending on preference)
    • Username: Your Shaw email address without the @shaw.ca
    • Password: Your email password
  9. Tap Done, and then Next
  10. You can now select Account options: Email checking frequency (15 minutes by default), Send email from this account by default (checkbox), and Notify me when email arrives (checkbox) -- make your selections and tap Next
  11. Your Shaw email account is now set up on your Sony Ericsson Xperia Play and must be named - also be sure to enter your name to be displayed on outgoing messages

Microsoft Exchange email setup

The Microsoft Exchange setup procedure described below can also be used to set up your Shaw.ca email address. Exchange offers advanced mail handling, less confusion for accounts connected to multiple devices, and synchronization with calendars and contacts. Any emails sent from this device will appear on Webmail and any emails deleted from the device will also be deleted from Webmail and the server.
 
To configure your phone/tablet to send and receive emails using an Exchange Server:

 

  1. Select the APPS button on your Xperia Play phone
  2. Choose Mail
  3. Enter your full Shaw email address and password
  4. Choose Manual Setup
  5. Tap Exchange ActiveSync
  6. Enter the following:
    • Server Address: wm.shaw.ca
    • Domain: shaw.ca
    • Username: Your Shaw email address without @shaw.ca
    • Use Secure Connection (SSL): Yes (add a check mark)
    • Accept all SSL certificates: Yes (add a check mark)
  7. Choose Next
  8. Choose which services you would like to sync (Mail, Contacts, and Calendar)
  9. Press Finish

WiFi setup

To connect your Sony Ericsson Xperia Play to your wireless (WiFi) network, follow these steps:

 

  1. Press the APPS button on your Xperia Play
  2. Select Settings
  3. Select Wireless & Networks
  4. Select Wi-Fi (turn on Wi-Fi). Your device will let you know that Wi-Fi networks are available
  5. Select Wi-Fi Settings (setup & manage wireless access points)
  6. Tap on the network that you would like to connect to from the available list
    • If you are using a Shaw Wireless Modem you will be able to find your network name by looking at the white sticker on the top of the modem*
  7. Enter the network password (unless the network is open and requires no password)
    • If you are using a Shaw Wireless Modem you will be able to find your network password by looking at the white sticker on the top of the modem*
  8. Press Connect

* If you have customized your network name (SSID) and/or password and can no longer remember the login credentials, you will need to restore it to factory settings.
