Protected Browsing FAQs

Learn more about how Protected Browsing works in Ignite HomeConnect with these frequently asked questions.

What is Protected Browsing?
Protected Browsing is an opt-in service that you can use to help safeguard your home network against malicious content. In order to use the feature - which we offer at no additional cost - you must enable it using the Ignite HomeConnect App or website by going to the Network section and selecting Protected Browsing. You can turn it off at any time.

When enabled, Protected Browsing can reduce the risk of accessing known sources of malware, spyware, and phishing for all devices connected to your home network. The feature is powered by Zvelo, a leading provider of filtering technology that is used by many organizations including Internet and security providers. Zvelo maintains and updates the list of filtered sites. If a device connected to your home network attempts to access a website known to host malicious content, a block page will be displayed. In the case of secure websites (https) or mobile applications, the block page may not be displayed, but access is still prevented.

What criteria is used to determine if content is safe to access with the Protected Browsing feature?
Shaw has engaged a third-party vendor to determine which content should be restricted under Protected Browsing.

To do this, the vendor maintains a database that maps online content to a set of over 400 categories. Based on industry standards, best practices and experience, our vendor has recommended that content in categories related to malware, spyware, viruses, phishing, child abuse, software piracy and copyright theft be blocked under Protected Browsing.

The filters applied when Protected Browsing is enabled in the More section are aligned to these recommendations.

Can I add or remove specific websites from Protected Browsing?
Not at this time. To access a blocked website, you will need to disable Protected Browsing.

Does Protected Browsing protect devices when using a public Rogers WiFi Hotspot or cellular network?
Protected Browsing only protects devices connected to your personal home network.

Does Protected Browsing guarantee that access to all malicious content will be prevented?
While the vendor regularly updates the database for potentially dangerous online content, Protected Browsing doesn't guarantee protection from all malware, spyware, viruses, phishing or other threats. New malicious content can be introduced at any time, so it is recommended that safe Internet practices always be followed.
