Google ChromebookThis guide will walk you through how to connect to a WiFi (wireless) network on your new Google Chromebook. Follow a few easy steps to set up your WiFi connection and get the most out of your Chromebook.

How to connect to your Home WiFi

To set up your WiFi connection on your Google Chromebook, follow the instructions below.

 

  1. Click the network icon in the lower-right corner of your screen
    • Network Icon is what the network icon looks like
  2. Select your network status from the menu that appears
  3. Make sure WiFi usage is enabled, which will allow your Chromebook to detect nearby networks
    • WiFi Disabled means WiFi is currently disabled (click on this symbol to enable WiFi)
    • WiFi Enabled means WiFi is already enabled
  4. Detected networks will automatically show up in the menu. To connect to a network, simply select its name
  5. Enter the network password (unless the network is open and does not require a password)
  6. When you see the network icon in the lower-right corner of the screen, your Chromebook is connected to the network

 

If you are connecting to your home Shaw WiFi network and have a Shaw WiFi modem, you can find the network name (SSID) and password located on the white sticker on the back or bottom of your wireless modem.

Did You Know?

 

If you have customized your network name (SSID) and/or password and can no longer remember the login credentials, you will need to restore it to factory settings.

How to connect to a Shaw Go WiFi Hotspot

Shaw Go WiFi is a complimentary service available to all Shaw Internet customers, whereby they can automatically connect to any of Shaw's thousands of WiFi hotspots located across Western Canada. Once you've signed in you'll automatically connect to additional Shaw Go WiFi hotspots every time you're within range.

 

  1. Click the network icon in the lower-right corner of your screen
    • Network Icon is what the network icon looks like
  2. Select your network status from the menu that appears
  3. Make sure WiFi usage is enabled, which will allow your Chromebook to detect nearby networks
    • WiFi Disabled means WiFi is currently disabled (click on this symbol to enable WiFi)
    • WiFi Enabled means WiFi is already enabled
  4. Detected networks will automatically show up in the menu. Click on the ShawOpen network to select it
  5. When you see the network icon in the lower-right corner of the screen, your Chromebook is connected to the network
  6. Once connected, you'll need to sign in to use Shaw Go WiFi. To sign in, open up Google Chrome and you will be automatically redirected to the Shaw Go WiFi sign in page where you can sign in with your @shaw.ca email address

 

If you'd like to simplify the Shaw Go WiFi connection experience, you can register your Chromebook while at home. Once registered, you'll only need to connect to the ShawOpen network once, and no sign in will be required. For more information, see the following article.
