Accessing home wifi devices remotely

Recently I've become interested in wifi enabled devices like the Nest programmable thermostat, and the Belkin WeMo outlets and switches. One of the appealing aspects for me is the capability to contact these devices remotely over the internet to change settings - for example turn up the house temperature from work if I,m leaving early on a cold day so the house is warm when I arrive. Or turning lights on or off outside their normal schedule.

Before I invest in anything, I'd like to know if this type of remote access to these devices is even possible for a shaw personal internet customer. If anyone here is already doing this, or can point me towards a support file or instructions on how to set it up, I'd appreciate the help.
