During my Gateway install, the tech suggested that the Arris boxes could be customized to change the display, showing channel no. when on and dark when off. HOW???
To my knowledge the Portals will only display the time, but you can set the brightness. This is accessible from the settings menu and the selection you are looking for is "Front Panel"
It can't show the channel number (yet?), but you can change the display, so that it is dimmer or off, but it isn't dynamic (changes according to current status of Portal)
You can dim or brighten the numbers...
Except you can't actually read it.
I had the DCX3400 before and could easily see the time across the living room from the kitchen.
I don't know what cadet designed the display on the portals, but they obviously didn't do any testing in real home environment settings.
I would think that it would be pretty basic that most people that invest in the Whole Home are going to be in dimmed rooms / home theater - yah, you CAN'T read the blue.
It's disappointing because the Motorola's were the easy check after power failures.
Now basically the clock front is useless.
In our bedroom unit, I've disabled as it's like an airport landing light for brightness (even on the dimmest), and you still can't read the clock.
And then of course if you try the Guide, they hide the current time in small font top corner left - and hey Sherlock, let's go with Light Grey on Dark Blue background. Everyone with Superman eyes should be able read that.
Does know one put these units through lab testing, and oh, maybe haul in a few families for real world testing?
Yeah, the new ones are White, supposed to be better
Haven't seen them yet personally though
