We currently have Shaw Gateway. We recently ordered Center Ice. Why is the hockey game broadcast so quiet that we can hardly hear it and yet the commercials broadcast so loud that we are getting complaints from the neighbours?
Which game, which channel?
We subscribe to Shaw Centre Ice which broadcasts on TSN Jets which comes up on different channels. We live in Port Moody BC. It broadcasts on any channel from 350 - 354. The play by play is extremely quiet and the commercials are very loud. We talked to friends in Manitoba and they are experiencing the same problems in Winnipeg with their shaw feed. This has been going on for last season as well as this season.
Just to clarify, you're seeing this on every Centre Ice game?
Thanks for confirming that.
With some programming, sometimes the situation is that the programming volume is on the lower side and when a commercial comes up, although the volume isn't technically any higher, the audio is shaped in such a way that it can sound much louder than the program you were watching.
That said, I'm going to see if we can replicate this from our end and send it up to our video operations departments.
I've heard back on this. The issue may be related to the sound channel configuration in place. If the game is being broadcast in 5.1 and the commercials are being broadcast in stereo, the volume levels may be quite different as a result if you're using a receiver. I'm not 100% certain this is the answer, but we'll be able to look into it further when the Jets' home game is broadcast tomorrow.
Can you confirm that you're using a receiver for 5.1 surround? If you are, can you try switching it to stereo or using your TV speakers to see if the game is still much quieter than the commercials? I'll be sure to check the game here tomorrow as well.
Just an FYI for you namracs, I watched some of the game tonight, but I didn't notice any huge change in volume going from the broadcast to commercials. I was watching on a TV with the audio coming from the TV speakers in stereo.
we also watched the hockey game on friday as well as on Sunday We did not notice a big difference in the volumes either.
I wonder if your video operations Department did something when they went in to scope out the problem. Anyway, thank you for responding to my problem.
Who knows, it's possible for sure, although they didn't mention it. It's also possible there was a level issue at the area and it was resolved.
Either way, let me know if you notice this again.
Hi again namracs, I'm sending a direct message to your Community Inbox to take a closer look at your account specifically.

Not sure if this is related to any kind of compliance issue, but good to reference that thread. By chance have you noticed this with Centre Ice games?
