MS Exchange is supported for iPad devices, but not listed as one of the options in guides to setting up Outlook on a laptop. Can it be used?
I can definitely appreciate the desire to have Exchange with ActiveSync support integrated into Outlook (this is very much something I'd like to use myself). As mentioned by in a previous discussion on the Zimbra Outlook Connector, this is currently not supported by Shaw and at this time we don't have any information that this is something which will be supported in the future. Microsoft is already starting to develop native ActiveSync support which will make the Connector unnecessary, hopefully we'll see this soon in an updated version of Outlook.
No, the Exchange account type will only work on mobile devices, phones, tablets... (there are exceptions, but they don't apply here)
Any progress/info/dates on enabling the Zimbra Outlook connector so Outlook users can use an activesync setup for Shaw email? What version of the Zimbra collaboration server is Shaw using. From the Zimbra site - since Activesync for mobile is enabled - it would appear that Shaw has the pro version which would include licensing for the Outlook connector as well.
I suspect with the size that Shaw is, the 'standard' licensing doesn't apply
I agree with licensing - my feeling is the Outlook Connector is already licensed/included - but has not been enabled/configured.
This may not be "supported" by shaw - but why not enable the access? Just let those of us who want to use it do so. It seems the majority of email posts and issues are related to Activesync of email on non mobile devices. When zimbra desktop or the Zimbra Outlook connector are available - why not promote and use them? Even to mention the Zimbra desktop for users for email would be a start - free and gives a desktop activesync email client including contacts and calendar. While it is not quite as nice as outlook - at least better than zero contact/calendar sync.
If you are looking for a tester for the Zimbra Client for Outlook - sign me up.
There is way to much of of "the feature is there but Shaw is not enabling it" for email , gateway, PVR's, etc. This would be an easy win - and for many would cut down on issues with email and contacts on desktops/laptops.
Someone else mentioned here, that found out, or works on the servers, Shaw hasn't licensed the connector from Zimbra, so it doesn't work
The licensing for Zimbra shows the Outlook Connector licensing included with the Zimbra collaboration server network edition - which is also the only version that offers mobile activesync. This would mean the connector is licensed - but likely the license has not been configured or activated. From the Zimbra support documentation , the feature does need to be activated/enabled.
There has been very little information supplied by Shaw other than "not available, don't know".
As [shaw]ali mentioned to you here, we have not licensed the software. I understand that you are likely looking at documentation publicly available with regards to what their license options are, but remember that there may also be options available for companies to work with the provider to customize the license and plans more freely. It may also have been something that was not necessarily included at the time we originally were in discussions with Zimbra.
I appreciate your interest in this feature, but it is not something that we are just not activating and it's not something we look to license from Zimbra at this time.
Thanks for the updated information.
In other threads regarding webmail, activesync, servers it was mentioned the email servers would be getting an upgrade in the Fall (v8?). Is this still the case ? And is this still expected to resolve the Win8 activesync issue with attachments and potentially the Outlook 2010 sync issues?
