does anyone know if you have a xbox 1 ( it has a pvr) do you need a shaw box/
Yes you would still need a cable box. The Xbox 1 being able to record content doesn't mean it has the ability to receive cable signal and authorize content (channels) from Shaw.
I thought you might be able to use the digital box but still get hd?
Okay, I see where you're coming from. The content recorded and played back by the Xbox would only be as good as it's source. If you were using a standard digital box then you'd only get a standard definition recording. A HD box would still be necessary to get HD quality.
I'm pretty sure the DVR function of the Xbox One is just for recording gameplay though, same as the PS4. I could be wrong there, haven't read up on it too much yet.
thanks for reading my mind
I know I was being vague
No problem. I'm sure as time goes on we'll all have more knowledge of what the new consoles are capable of.
But yeah, I just researched a bit more and the DVR function in both the X One and PS4 are just for recording your own gameplay. Apparently they're limited to something like 10-15 minutes per recording. Just there so you can record a game and share it. Pretty cool feature, but I don't believe it's designed to be able to record from other devices.
I know it can watch TV through your HD terminal (as an input), but I had never heard of it being able to record TV.
Built in streaming to twitch, might be neat.
Right.. you can use the console as an input for a cable box so it's like a full entertainment experience. That's pretty awesome. Would be amazing if you could record TV that way, but that doesn't appear to be the intended use.
I tweeted Marc Whitten about whether or not I could still use the cable box remote to access dvr functions on it while it passes through the Xbox. He said yes. I think the dvr limitation through One Guide is throwing people off.
At that point, it won't matter what your PVR is outputting, the Xbox will display whatever it gets
