Internet Explorer 9 - 32bit version

I have Internet Explorer in both a 32 bit and 64 bit version.  I usually use the 32 bit version but when I got a "cannot connect" message I tried the 64bit version and found I could connect.  To add to the confusion, Windows Mail connects, Outlook doesn't.  And other programs that require an internet connection such as the Apple Store from ITunes doesn't connect.

It seems these programs prefer IE 32-bit as do some of my security programs that want to update virus data bases.
