How do we access Shaw's Usenet groups?
You can access the Shaw Newsgroups using the server: news.shawcable.net
Almost any news-client will do,
news.shawcable.net limit your client to 5 sessions and no authenication
I use shawnews.wp.shawcable.net as my server name, port 119, no SSL, no username or pw. The server must be accessed through a Shaw connection (not through DSL/3G). Server allows up to 4 simultaneous connections.
shawnews.shawcable.net is the same server
4 now? I know it used to be 5, or 4 transfers plus 1 to browse?
Don't think it really matters though, so good to know.
There's some good free programs that you can download and use to access newsgroups. A search for 'free usenet news readers' should bring up some useful pages, including http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Usenet_newsreaders.
Does anyone have any suggestions on which programs they find the most useful?
I used to use Xnews. It's slow and clunky, and hasn't been updated in forever, but it usually does the job. It handles binaries including MIME, UUEncode, yEnc, and multipart files without issue, but its performance suffers in the larger binaries groups, and it's hard to configure. It also allows you to read text posts and view JPG images directly from within the newsreader, without needing to save the post to your computer.
Recently, though, I've begun using Grabit. As its name implies, it's designed for grabbing binaries off the news server and downloading them to your computer. It handles multipart binaries and large groups really well, and takes advantage of multiple simultaneous connections to the server. However, it's not really designed for reading text posts (although it can do so), and it can't decode MIME.
