I have my outgoing mail server as mail.shaw.ca but I still cannot send a message.
What happens? Any error messages? Which email program are you using?
I get a message saying that the user name or password is incorrect but it is the same information I used fro the incoming.
The outgoing mail server requires an account name WITHOUT the @shaw.ca at the end.
Incoming requires a full email account as in email@example.com
Outgoing requires an account without the domain as in: username

You did say you used the same settings for both.
Maybe I should ask the more obvious question. Depending how you wish to connect will dictate which outgoing mail server method you will want to use.
Are you at home/business trying to send email or are you outside your home/business trying to send email while on the road?
If you are connecting via your Shaw cable modem you don't need a user name and password when coming through the Shaw network to the outside. Outgoing Port 25 with no authentication (and no username) should be good enough. Shaw doesn't need authentication because you are already inside their network.
If however you are on a laptop for example and access the internet from outside Shaw's network and try to send email via Shaw you need to set up an outgoing mail configuration using port 587(With SSL/TLS) with a username and password

not sure where my reply went but this didn't work for me on my laptop. Made all the changes - did the test - got "errors"
It would help if we knew the error message you were getting. As well which email client are you using (Thunderbird, Outlook, Applemail etc)
Generally speaking your mail client needs to be set to
Outgoing server set to mail.shaw.ca
"Normal Password" authentication
Port 587 is necessary (Not port 25) and so is STARTTLS (SSL/TLS option won't work from my experience).
This outgoing setup should work whether you are inside or outside Shaw's network.I just tried it here at home and recently set up a friend who had the exact same problem. In her case she was using Outlook.
Of course the accountname you use is
firstname.lastname@example.org (The @shaw.ca is required for outgoing mail)
