My laptop was locked up this morning. It looked like the malware known as Internet Police Department. I restarted and it appeared to be OK. I ran Shaw Secure /McAfee. How do I check if the malware is gone?
Good evening jleszko
Running an anti-virus program is really all you can do. Unless you know the file name and location you would not be able to confirm with certainty that the malware is removed. A google search may be able to give you more information on the particular malware and possibly the location of it but I would be very careful when you do so as you don't want to click on something that ends up infecting your PC again.
Run another scan/full scan with Shaw Secure McAfee, then try another scanner, F-Secure's online scan, Malwarebytes, Housecall, something like that to be sure the new program doesn't detect anything either
Some good suggestions above, I will tag our Shaw Secure expert for this conversation shaw-phil as he may be able to provide further insight on this piece of malware for you.
McAfee has been good with getting updates regarding this infection, though sometimes they may take a few days after most get the infection (after an update is received for the new variant). With this infection there's only one or two files it's actually running... they're just very good with blocking user access to the desktop and applications, however background applications (like McAfee) are still running. If you don't see the infection, it is very likely gone. Test browsing, make sure you don't see any popups or redirections. Also, please ensure that Java software and Windows is kept up to date... as that is your best method for protection against these infections.
