Shaw e-mail setup

This has probably been asked before so please accept my apologise if it has. On a mobile device the recommended configuration mention to access your e-mail is to use Exchange or ActiveSync. But for the laptop or desktop configuration the recommendation is POP3. This seems counter-intuitive as one method allows you to keep all your messages on the server and organized into folders, etc. The other method requires you to download all your messages to your computer.

Is there no way to setup a non-mobile device to access e-mail through an Exchange configuration? I know you can use IMAP but Exchange is so much more efficient as you also have access to contacts, calendars, etc.
