I use shawweb mail and I have office 2010 which works fine with windows 8 but I cannot open any word attachments? Any suggestions or help please?
When you try to open an attachment (double-clicking it I assume), does anything happen? Are you seeing any error messages? It may be that the document is being downloaded, but not opening automatically. Or are you able to download the document but simply not open it within Word?
When I click to open the attachement at the bottom is says do you want to open or save so click open and it takes me to a small window that says 'track and manage downloads (or words like that). nothing I do will open it at all. when I click open on that page all it does is add another line with the same attachement name. Very frustrated.
Hmm, that's odd behaviour. If you're seeing 'View and track your downloads', that sounds like Internet Explorer to me and it sounds like it's not opening the file properly for one reason or another, or is trying to open within Internet Explorer itself instead of Word and failing. The file should be saved however, so if you go to your downloads folder you should be able to double click and open it from there.
There are a couple of ways to get Internet Explorer to open .doc or .docx files with Word automatically, but see if you can open it manually first.
I have tried that and get nothing. I think it Is being downloaded not opened. I tried it with chrome and have the same issue. last night I spoke to someone with shaw and he said there has been an ongoing issue between shaw and Microsoft about this issue with window 8. He did not know enough about windows 8 to get around it. Microsoft will never admit to their being issues so what am I to do???? I am elderly and just do not know enough about computers to play with it.
I just tried again to open it in my download folder and all I get is that same box. Have no idea what to try now.
I'm sure we can help you get this figured out. So you're opening it within your downloads folder as you would any other file and you're getting that dialogue box from Internet Explorer showing View and track your downloads? What you can try doing in that case, is to hold down the Shift key on your keyboard and then right-clicking on the document (do this in your downloads folder itself, not within the Internet Explorer downloads window). You should see an Open With... option.
Once that comes up, in the list of programs you should see Microsoft Word in there (hopefully - you may need to expand the list that you see). There's also a checkbox at the bottom which says 'Always use this program to open this type of file'. See if this works for you.
this does not work. when I do the enter key and open it takes me back to that box and keeps adding another file of the same name.
Can you try again by holding the Shift Key on your keyboard, then right-clicking on the document? You should see an Open With option.
Did exactly that took me to the same track downloads, clicked open and at the bottom options and that lead me to notify about downloads so again nothing Is working. I am feel totally inadequate here and feel I am going to have to pay someone to come in and fix whatever the problem is either with the email or the program. This should not be happening.
I would recommend to first reset the cache in Internet Explorer. Steps on doing this can be found at Internet Browser Support. When you get to the page with the "reset" option, also click "restore advanced settings".
If that doesn't work, you will have to tell Windows to fix the file association. As shaw-matt mentioned, if you right click the Word document and chose "open with" (instead of just "open"), it should bring you to another window that will have "Choose the program you want to use to open this file". Word should be here. If not, click "browse" and look in the directory list for it.
