My mother has one of these simple remotes. The only problem is that there does not seem to be a way to view all of the TV listings as with a regular remote. She has no way of knowing what is on TV. Any suggestions other than buying a TV digest?
Hey there bag219
There is unfortunately no Guide or Menu functionality on the simplified Transport remote. Maybe the Champ remote would be a viable option for her. It's a bit more complex but doesn't have as many features as the Atlas (PVR) remotes. More info can be found here: Shaw Remote Control overview
Thanks for the info, will check out paper digest.
Are you aware of a big button remote my elderly mother with vision problems could use with;
-preferrably shaw gateway
- alternately A shaw hdtv box
We only have the one remote for the Gateway system.
But for all of our stand-alone HD boxes, she could use the transport remote. The buttons are huge and there are fewer of them to remember the positions of. But it's not too practical if she has a PVR.
ross353 , do an Internet search for senior's remote control and check out the flipper. There now seem to be more choices than when we bought one last year. One could use it to get around the power synchronization problem, i.e., the two devices (TV & box) getting out of sync, one on, the other off, and it has large buttons but it doesn't offer access to the TV Guide nor does it (without resorting to entering a limited list of favourite channels) allow the senior (on most Shaw boxes, including the DCT700) to go up and down the channels without having to see all the channels that aren't available too.
Oh and I believe the flipper only works (out-of-the-box) with Shaw's non-Gateway set-top boxes. The flipper is configurable but I am not sure whether it can be configured to operate the Gateway.
With our senior we've reverted back to the basic (analog) cable channels. Hardly very satisfactory.
Setting a DCX3200 with that remote, may be a good option
Might be. I've wondered about it for a while. A friend has one (if it's the one I am thinking of) and it looks a little busy on screen (after changing channels etc.) but I for one will look into it. Thanks.
