What universal remote can I use to control the gateway (arris) receiver other than the harmony remote, that's not that expensive. I want to control the tv and audio system.
If you don't mind doing some reading, this WEB site: Remotes Home Page describes how you can program UEI or OFA universal remotes to control virtually everything including the Arris Portal. The documentation for how to do this can be found here: Main Page - JP1 Remote Control System I have contributed a "download" for the Arris portal which you can use for a template to add support for the Arris portal to many UEI or OFA universal remotes and you can find it here: JP1 Remotes :: File Section Note that the download was originally developed for the Shaw 11055 (or 1055) UEI remote which is what Shaw uses/used with their other PVR equipment. It is easily configured for other remotes by using the RMIR software (freeware) provided from the same JP1 group. Note that the download needs to be "compiled" by the RMIR software in order to create a binary image for the remote you plan to use. You'll also need an interface cable (signal converter cable) that hooks your remote to your computer. This is all described in the JP1 Remote Control System WEB site. Have fun!
Logitech Harmony One is the remote on most . Been slowly programing remote to do what I want with the gateway so it is one button push to do any thing . Been working on it for a day so far but once i am done sure it will be great to use . I can also use that one remote to control all my other devices
There are other Harmony remotes too, new, I think the cheapest one currently sold is $70, it is just that the Harmony One is a great remote and many people use it haha, but it isn't sold anymore either (I think the Harmony Touch replaced it).
But other remotes and other brands, no idea which will operate the Portals
Yes the Touch replaced it but hey us old guys hold onto things if they work lol. I should ask a friend who makes apps to come up with a remote for my tablet . that would be worth me paying him 500 buck lol
Looking at the Touch, additionally, I like the One better, more actual buttons/keys lol
an update for you kevinds . I downloaded logitech's mobile remote app ( i can because I am a customer ) . I put it on a samsung galaxy note . programed the tablet for the gateway . then put remote access on samsung tablet . left tablet at home today facing portal . I access tablet from work today got in remote app on tablet and i started changing channels and even started a recording . I did have to go and look up what was on and what time but hey thats only another web page . It did scare my daughter because channels started changing . now if I could figure out how to have cam on tablet so I could see guide on tv that would be even better
Try and get in on the Gateway Android application testing, has the Guide and channel changing or PVR playback from anywhere
Last I heard they had all their testers in place. I am just doing this to see what i can do until they have all testing and the app done and ready for release. I am sure i can get the cam to work so I can see the guide just a matter of time thats all
Has anyone used the URC-A6 remote on the portals?
The O.F.A. URC-8800 uses a tablet as the controller. Best idea for a remote that I have yet seen. Details here: Tablet remote - URC 8800 | One For All | Global
