HDMI Audio Output Format DCX3510-M?

Is there anyway to specifically choose an audio format when connected by HDMI?  The only thing in the audio settings is to select PCM or Dolby digital but that is only for the Optical Audio Out.  The reason I ask is I have the HDPVR connected to my Toshiba 58L1350UC and then the TV connected to a JBL sound bar by optical cable.  I get sound from the sound bar when I choose the PCM format in the TV's digital audio format output menu, but as soon as I change a channel on the PVR it switches back to Auto and I no longer get sound from the sound bar.  To me it seems like the DCX3510-M is using a Dolby Digital format automatically which isn't compatible with the sound bar (although JBL says it is).
