Trying to get IR remote doohickey to work

I have a Gateway, just got it installed last week. The installer didn't install the remote extension because I was not going to hide the portal in a cabinet or anything. Well, it's on the low shelf of my entertainment unit and it's become a pain to aim the remote properly, so now I want to add the remote extension to make it easier to use, but it doesn't seem to be working at all. I don't know what I could be doing wrong, because the thing doesn't come with any instructions whatsoever.

I plugged it in the back of the portal in what I'm almost certain is the correct one - it has an icon that looks like the extension, and it is the only port the plug fits in. But it's not working. Any ideas, guys?
