outgoing server problem

I've just set up a new home computer with Windows 7 and am shifting from Outlook Express to Thunderbird as my email client.  In doing the setup, I identified my existing shawmail account and used the webmail password for authentification.  Everything seemed ok, and I'm receiving emails just fine. However,  when I try to send outgoing mail the server rejects the password. None of the instructions that I've found fix this problem.  Any help?
