We have on older TV Which is not HD although the HD channels are are clearer on it. We have ordered a Gateway system. Will it work with our old Sony?
Yes, the Shaw Gateway will work with your old Sony TV, you can connect the Gateway Portal to your TV using the "Composite" (red/white/yellow) cables - for further description of cables see Glossary of cables and connections.
Next step would be in the Settings menu - under Aspect Ratio on the Portal, you can specify the TV type you have: Standard (4:3) TV.
You won't have to do any of the above as the Shaw installer will set this up for you.
Yes, I have one of my Portals connected to an SD TV
While you can set the picture to 4:3, and the picture to letterbox, creating black-bars on the top and bottom to fit the entire picture... The Guide/Menu doesn't do this, so some stuff is cut off, and doesn't look right.
Otherwise, yes, I noticed that too, the HD version looks significantly better than watching the same content on the SD channel
Also check if your Sony TV has the component inputs, red blue green red white connection on it, even though it is not an HD TV, I have seen a few SD TVs with this input, and looks a little better - can set the format to 480p...
