How do I set up Windows Live Mail so that messages are automatically removed from the webmail inbox when downloaded to local storage in Windows live mail?
Hi there bobbygee
There's a setting in Windows Live Mail that says "Leave a copy of messages on server." If we make sure that's unchecked (turned off) then it will automatically remove emails from Webmail.
Hopefully this helps! Please let me know if you have any further questions.
It doesn;t do what I want. If I only view a message in Windows live mail, the message should stay on Shaw webmail. It should remove the message from Shaw webmail only when I transfer the message from Windows Shaw inbox to my local storage. That is the way it works with Windows Hotmail on the web, and also the way it worked with Telus webmail.
If you configure the account with the above settings the program will delete messages from webmail when they are deleted from the inbox in Windows Live Mail. If you copy the message to another location, you will still have to delete the original message from the inbox. This will indicate to the program that you no longer wish to leave a copy in webmail. We hope this helps!
Noah, it does not do that. I just did a test and forwarded a message from hotmail to my Shaw mail. I saw the message in Windows live mail, and left it in Windows live mail Shaw account inbox, and closed Windows Live mail. I then went to the Shaw webmail on the internet, and the message was NOT there. The message is still in my Windows live mail Shaw account inbox, but it is gone from Shaw webmail.
I think what you're trying to accomplish here is not quite possible within the scope of what Windows Live Mail can be configured to do. WLM can download messages and then instruct the server to remove the message after being downloaded, but it cannot send a command to the server to remove the message only after it has been transferred to another folder.
If I'm off-base on what you're trying to do though, let me know.
Well, in my Windows Live mail settings for both my hotmail and Telus accounts, the box is selected to leave messages on the server. But, when I move the messages from the live mail inboxes to local storage, they are also removed from the servers. Only Shaw webmail does not do that.
Do you perhaps have your Hotmail and Telus accounts configured with IMAP instead of POP/SMTP? If that's the case, that would be why you're seeing that behaviour, as IMAP works a little differently (it's synced to the server, whereas with POP will access the server to download your mail and can send a deletion command, but doesn't interface in any other way).
Hotmail is a pop server and telus is imap.
I believe Hotmail might have more functionality even though it is POP. Could be wrong, it's been ages since I've used it. With our POP server and a shaw.ca email address, though, the way it's working for you currently is normal.
You can configure WLM to only leave copies for a certain number of days, or only to remove messages from the server when you delete them within the program. Those additional settings might be useful here. Other than that though it sounds like everything's working as it should be.
I guess I'll have to accept that Shaw and hotmail servers work differently.
I use my laptop for most of my web services except for banking. I had previously used my telus mail for ebill notifications and left my ebill notifications in my laptop windows mail inbox until I logged in to my desktop computer to do my banking. On the desktop I logged in to the internet mail to see which bills to download and pay. The next time I logged in to my laptop mail, I would transfer the old messages to my local storage, and they would then be gone from the server, With Shaw, it will leave all my bills there until I manually delete them, Which is a pain, and I also have to check whether I have already paid a certain bill. It is also prone to errors as I may delete a message that I have not acted on.
I think I will have to use hotmail as my ebill notification address. In the past I was reluctant to do that, since I get spam messages on hotmail, but rarely on telus. However telus will be gone since I have switched over to Shaw, so I think my best bet is hotmail.
I just FINALLY got it all working...I think correctly.
I had a similar problem of WLM not removing from server after deleting even with everything checked correctly.
Nothing worked, changing preferences, selecting and deselecting, APPLY--Didn't sync crap BUT....
After deleting a message from WLM and hitting SEND/REC all was in harmony. I think that is the trick is deleting/moving to local storage will only work if you tell WLM to tell shaw.ca to delete.
Hope this helps, or maybe your issue is slightly different.
Anyone know how to import my shaw webmail folders??
