I have Shaw 50MB Hi Speed internet. Do I have to use the SMC modem supplied by Shaw or I can I just get a better, newer one from Best Buy or Future Shop? I think the wi-fi range of the SMC modem is below par.
Anyone have the answer?
You can have us "bridge" the SMC WiFi modem so that it turns off the router functions and acts like a wired-only modem and then can hook up your own 3rd party router to it, such as one you get from Best Buy or Future Shop.

You do need to use their modem (or one of a very short list) but you can get your own router and have it bridged. Once you have your router, you'll need to call tech support to have them bridge the modem for you.
You need to use the Shaw modem to get your internet service, but you're certainly welcome to use a third party router for your wifi. If you do this it's best to put the modem in bridged mode, which we need to do from a here. A moderator can help you with this, or you can call our tech support line.
