Since the recent gateway upgrade, non-hd channels appear as letterbox. Will this be corrected at some point?
Hi there email@example.com
There are settings you can change on your Portal that may correct that. It's possible the update reverted something that just needs to be changed back. Have a look here please: How to change the resolution settings on your Digital Box (you may need to scroll to the bottom to get to the Gateway section).
Let me know if that helps and we'll go from there.
These setting were change to the optimal settings in the upgrade, for all users that prefer the stretched picture they can go into Settings -> Aspect Ratio -> widescreen (16:9) TV and Select <Stretch>
I corrected the settings but did you know on certain channels there are still top and bottom black bars. The settings stretch the picture horizontally but not vertically. Is this something that will be fixed?
Black bars at the top and bottom are just due to the way that particular show is formatted. Movies, for example, often have a wider aspect ratio. So, it's normal if you're only seeing it on certain programs. You may find if you tune back to one of those channels later on (when something else is on) the bars on the top and bottom will not be there.
Especially older movies showing in "HD" (before HD existed) - they take the theatre version and record it digitally, from a 21:9 theatre movie, you end up with black bars on top and bottom to fit a 16:9 TV
Thank you the information. The black bars and the top and bottom did not show up on any channels prior to the gateway upgrade. The point is that something changed due to the upgrade.
Thanks for your post, could you give me an example of which show or channel you were watching prior the upgrade that did not experience the letter boxing but now is?
What model, brand, size of television do you have?
I have asked our engineering team for further clarification on this and will get back to you with an answer.

I am not seeing any differences between the previous version and this version.
I will say that it does depend on content for sure.
As an example:
Channel 54 (E) has black bars left and right but covers top and bottom. This is on Maintain. This is the same as the previous version. Using "stretch" will cover the screen.
Channel 5 (ABC) has mixed results depending on programming. Sometimes it will come in the same as E, other times it might have letterbox affect. This is on maintain.
Channel 6 presently has a letterbox (using Maintain) and stretch has black bars on top and bottom.
If there was an issue with SD aspect ratio's, that would be consistent with all SD channels, but it all depends on programming.
Also, the aspect ratio matches HD guide and other boxes as well
Here is a comparison between a channel on the new code and one previous. As you can see, they are identical
188.8.131.52 SD channel
7.1.2 SD Channel
I am having the identical problem. For example CTV NEWS .. channel 22 ? 25 ?? ( cant remember, i am at work). it is SD and it used to fill the screen on my wide screen tv. The Stretch/maintain option did appear to get reset with the upgrade... so i reset to stretch. But as reported above it stretches the picture horizontally but not vertically - it used to do both. When i have the maintain option checked i have a SD rectangle with black bars all around.
I checked other sd channels and they do the same thing. It was not like this before upgrade - everyone in the family noticed the change on various channels.
since i have shown you the before and after being identical, can you take a video of what you are seeing to compare. The update from reports may have reset back to maintain rather than stretch after the update but the setting it was on was ignored (ie if it was set to stretch). Going back to maintain and then stretch puts it back to normal.
try different channels and different programming throughout the day. You will find that the black bars (top and bottom) go away when a program fills the screen vertically with black bars left and right, where as a full letterboxed will result in black bars top and bottom.
iiIn the videos above, that shows a letterbox between the old code and new code. If you also want to see left right bar one i can do that, the result will be identical
Confirmed. Something did change with the software update. Maybe the 16:9 options weren't retained.
I noticed the same as the OP last night. For example, 52 (CW) used to stretch to 16:9 before the update and now it's displaying in 4:3 with black bars. Because I have a plasma TV I always set up my cable boxes to stretch 4:3 content to 16:9... that's how I know it was different before
I have 480p and 480i disabled on the Portal and the box is converting and outputting SD as 720p. I haven't looked at the 16:9 stretch option setting yet.
OK, setting the 16:9 option to stretch has resolved my problem.
Yep, that's pretty much what we noticed with a few other examples.
Here's the full steps for anyone who comes across this issue: Settings > Aspect Ratio > TV Type (16:9) > Stretch
