Most of my recording disappeared overnight? Several episodes of series and some entire shows. I have tried power cycling both the gateway unit and expander..nothing has returned!

Are you noticing the recordings are missing on multiple Portals/TVs, or just one?
I haven't heard much about recordings disappearing on the Gateway system or if there's a way to track what happened. I'll tag our Gateway Guru mark_vse who may have some advice here.
there are only two ways recordings "disappear".
1). You have an expander, and the expander gets disconnected some how from the gateway (physically it can still be connected just somehow the drive gets unmounted). Sometimes a reboot of expander/gateway together fix that.
2). All your recordings are set for "keep until space is needed", and you have a lot scheduled coming up. The gateway manages recording space, and therefore it deletes recordings to make space for those events.
if you go into PVR, options, then to "canceled and deleted", browse through there to see if those recordings were deleted.
It was the expander and unfortunately resetting several times did nothing..I reformatted and will see how it goes. Thanks for your response.
I have am having a similar issue mark_vse. This morning my wife and son were watching a recording on the gateway. Later in the day all our recordings were gone. Most of our recordings were set "keep until space is needed" but two of our recordings are set to "keep until I delete."
I only had 25% space used. When I check cancelled and deleted is shows that the shows expired.
