Connecting a router

I am trying to help my brother-in-law setting up an external router to work with Shaw's Motorola Cable Modem 5B5101 surfboard.

I set up the router to behave as a bridge and connected both the modem and computer to the ethernet ports leaving the WAN port free.

Although I can connect wired and wireless to the router, there is no connection to the internet.

I brought the router home, and connected easily without changes, to Telus internet service in the same fashion. In fact I am using the router now to access the internet.

I have therefore concluded that something in Shaw's cable modem is set that I need to know about.

What setting(s) must I use to allow Shaw to see the router and connect with it?
