IS there a way I can assign certain computers priority of the Internet so when I'm doing work and someone else is just watching videos I can have more demand of the internet
You need to get a router with a QoS function, it does take a lot of tweaking to get QoS setup correctly for any situation, so expect it to take some work,
The router/modem combination from Shaw will not be adequate for this.
That would be something you'd set at the router level, but I don't know that you'd get the degree of control that you're looking for. The routers Shaw provides can prioritize wireless multimedia streaming traffic, but to my knowledge there isn't a way to give traffic priority to a specific device. Somebody with more experience with QoS settings might be able to tell you more, but so far as I know it's just not supported to that degree by the Cisco and SMC routers.
If you have your own router then you might have more or less control over it, but I'm not too sure there are a lot of (or any) residential routers that would let you do that.
