Different Channels Require Change in Screen Mode?

Is anyone else having the same problem as I am? Here is the problem:

 

When the service technician installed our DCX3200-M cable box, he said that if using the cable box remote I switched from say Channel 3 (CBC) to channel 142 (FOX News) I would then have to use our HD flatscreen remote to change the screen mode. I said do you mean to tell me that I have to have two remotes beside my chair for use when switching from a HD channel to a standard definition channel?  he said yes.

 

For the past 4 months this is what I have had to do. I've tried all kinds of combinations through the menus of both remotes to solve the issue, but nothing works. I finally just gave up and now use the two remotes as he advised.  This doesn't make any sense to me.
