Does anyone know why Shaw Direct doesn't have Gateway for satelite customers?
The Gateway is definitely an awesome piece of technology. When to comes to satellite technology it's a little more difficult to set up a 'whole home PVR' system. The reason it works so well with a Cable service is that the coaxial has a 2-way signal. The Gateway can communicate with the portals using the same cable it receives the programming from (and can also communicate back with Shaw). With satellite, this is a lot different and more complicated. There is no 2-way communication between different satellite receivers or with Shaw Direct. The receivers only get the signal from the dish via the direct connection and do not share anything with the other receivers in the home. This is also a reason why Shaw Direct receivers require an internet connection in order to stream Video on Demand content as they have no other ability to connect to the 'cloud'.
A Gateway type system is definitely something Shaw Direct is looking into for the future, but at this time we have no real time frame or any specific details to share.
