I recently connected an HD box to my new sony flat screen tv. I also bought a digital sound bar and optic cable. I cannot get the sound to come via optic it only comes through via the rca cables. Yet my blue ray comes through optic. any suggestions?
Do you have any other audio devises that take audio optical in? You would want to try this if you have a recieiver amp that takes optical audio in. Maybe try another optical cord from the HD box to your sound bar too.
There also could be compatibility issues with running optical to a sound bar. Some signals are encripted if they run through multiple devises to prevent unauthorized recordings.
I don't have any other devices to try. But if we go through the blueray DVD it works. Do you think there is anyway we are not getting a digital audio signal from shaw? Even when on HD channels the sound is not coming through the optic cable.
Thte digital sound bar (bought at costco) recommended for better sound to use optic rather then rca cables.
You are right. Optical audio is about as clear as it gets. Shaw HD boxes should constantly give out the optical signal no matter what other connections on the back of the HD box are connected.
If you have tried multiple optical cords then you may want to ask for a moderator for more support and get them to contact you directly.
What I would suggest trying,
Is swich the Bluray player and the Shaw HD terminal, using the same input on the sound-bar that the Shaw unit is using,
This would test both the sound-bar's input and the optical cable.
Also check the back of the Shaw's HD unit, when it is on, make sure the optical output is 'lit'.
There is no setting required to be changed, the optical will be active for all channels, SD 2.0 sound, will come out as 2.0 sound to the optical receiver, SD channel with 5.1 sound, the audio receiver will get a 5.1 signal, same as an HD channel.
That is where I would start, making sure all the hardware is good.
Also try the coaxial SPDIF (same signal as the optical cable, just a copper cable instead).
Tried all of this. I was beginning to think it was the TV so hooked up the optical cable directly from my HD box to the soundbar. Still nothing. So it must be the box, even though there is a red light coming through the cable. Maybe the box is not transmitting the right audio. anymore suggestions?
It sounds like the problem just might be the cable box in this case if you're not getting any audio from optical to your sound bar or to your TV. I've sent you a Direct Message so we can take a closer look.
Just needed to check everything, the opical cable, the input on the systems. After that, looking like the cable terminal, if everything else passes.
Well no luck with this issue. Shaw Service Tech was over at the house yesterday. Tried switching out the HD box, still no sound. Tried switching the motorola hd box with a pvr, still no sound. All devices and cables are functional. Came to the conclusion that Shaw and my Vizio sound bar are just not compatible. Still doesn't make sense but must be the answer.
