McAfee Real-Time Scanning

Real-Time Scanning is using 50% or more of my CPU all the time. This results in jerky streaming video such as the recent real-time high altitude parachute jump. This was true on both my laptop and PC both running Window 7 OS. It was like watching a slide show with 1 second between frames. Neighbours also using Shaw Internet did not notice this problem. Not sure if they have upgraded to McAffee or not. I experimented with a recent streaming video that was jerky by turning off the McAfee real-time scanning and the problem was gone. I have noticed real-time audio occasionally breaks up and suspect the same culprit. What is the threat of  running my system with Real-Time Scanning turned off?
