PVR hard drive replace/repair

Recordings on my pvr started to freeze at some locations during the play back. Then the entire pvr started shutting down mid recording. then when the pvr came back on it would say that it cannot recognize the hard drive. I would power cycle it and then i would be able to watch the recordings again, and record some short tv shows. Now it doesnt even recognize the hard drive at all even if i restart it. I think there is a part of the drive that is corrupt. I tried calling shaw and going through the reset and initialization multiple times. I can still watch channels but cannot record or watch anything that was recorded. I am trying to find out if I can just buy a hard drive and install it myself or if I can bring it in somewhere to have the hard drive replaced without having to buy a whole new pvr. if that was the case it might make financial sense to me to switch providers if the other guys offered free hardware. Any help you can provide would be awesome.
