So for the last few weeks I've been seeing very slow streaming speeds from youtube, at all resolutions. Currently tonight, I've been waiting for about 45 minutes for a 15 minute 1080p video to buffer. I am using BB50 for my service.
That video took approx an hour to buffer fully.
Oh man, I have been having this problem big time! Posted in a similar thread where they were having the same issue in Calgary, but it was closed. Shaw Ali took my info a few days ago and I haven't heard from him since. Anyways, just going to copy and paste my posts from the closed thread:
I've been experiencing this problem for the past week or so. Youtube videos will not load, stream, play, just not working in general. I have BB50 and the speed is fine in all other aspects. I have been downloading from other services at my max speed, and speed tests are also fine. It seems as though only Youtube is slow, similar to the issues most have reported in this thread. This is really frustrating!
Oh, and I'm in Edmonton, SE. And to be a bit more specific, I'm not just talking about 1080p here. Even just trying to watch a video in small screen at 360 or 240p is near impossible lately. I try to watch the NPR tiny desk concerts in the lowest quality, since I mostly just want to hear the music, and even that doesn't work. Solution: downloaded them in high quality from iTunes in a matter of seconds. Just fix your issues with Youtube already! How can this be a consistent problem for well over a month?
I've watched a couple videos on sites like Vimeo and Liveleak and they seemed to load fine (no hiccups or pauses). My speed is mostly as promised, apart from some slowdown during prime time usage hours, but even at 1/10th of my highest speed Youtube videos should have no problem streaming in lower quality settings, and yet here I am...
Same problem in Calgary NE. I get brutal youtube streaming speeds as well as twitch.tv streaming speeds. This problem has not been fixed even though it was recently marked as fixed in a thread on these boards. The issue persists, and my friend (synlogek from the original thread) now maintains a separate Shaw and Telus subscription because Shaw streaming has been utterly destroyed in recent months. I used to be able to stream from GOMtv.net as well, but nowadays that doesn't stream properly either. 50 Mbps service here, and I can regularly download at 5MB/sec from usenet sites.
Whatever Shaw has changed recently has destroyed my ability to stream and I am now looking into alternatives. Buyer beware. I'm not willing to pay for two services at once but it appears that you either get good streaming through Telus or good max throughput for downloads through Shaw. The problem is NOT with these sites as my friend streams the same stuff from the same sites via Telus with no problems whatsoever (with a lower speed subscription, no less), yet when he switches his connection to use Shaw he experiences the same problem. This clearly puts the problem on Shaw, not on network configuration issues or on issues related specifically to the websites.
Sorry, just to update I used a VPN to stream from Twitch.tv and it worked perfectly.
We don't have too many reports coming in from that area of Edmonton but we'd happy to take a further look.
I'll send you a private message and please reply with your account information (account #, etc)

I just finished speaking with Jonathan (Shaw Chat Support) about this exact issue and he advised that I would be contacting you via this community thread.
The test results I gave him were: 83ms / 44.63 down / 1.41 up. I have been experiencing the problem for the last few weeks, upwards of a month (Since late october).
I am located on the west side of Edmonton (174 st / 98 ave).
Please let me know if there is any more information you would like!
Thanks for joining our Community and your post, Jonathan has forwarded me your account info and I'll be in touch with you with further steps.
I completely agree with the OP.
I'm also in SE Edmonton and wireless is now all but impossible to use in my home on any computer or device even though I've done everything in the trouble shooting guide including a powercycle EVERY time I want to connect, resetting the modem, changing the channel etc. etc.
Wired, which is super inconvenient as the one cable outlet in my home is smack in the middle of the living room, is still impossibly slow. Most evenings youtube is not even usable and if we're lucky can check email or my son do a bit of homework.
As for speed tests, they can't even be completed wireless, and wired it varies wildly so I can't even pin point a consistent speed other than frustrating.
Thanks for posting, would you mind sharing your account information with us so that we may further look in to this for you? I'll send you a private message if you want to reply with your account info that would be great.
I also cannot stream 720p or above content on Youtube. I'm near Whyte ave in Edmonton. Netflix works fine, as does Vimeo. Speedtest shows ~40Mbps down (I'm on the 100Mbps plan, but never get close to that...but that's another story). All devices that support Youtube (PS3, Xbox, Android tablet, Mac, iPad etc.) constantly buffer when playing HD videos. This appears to be a Youtube specific problem. If I use an i.p. blocker (hotspot shield) Youtube will stream fine in HD, so it looks like a Shaw networking thing. I'm paying $85 a month for my service and it is super frustrating to have this problem.
Ali, can you guys help me out?
same problem here in Winnipeg !
Haven't been able to located a common factor among these reports so far in this thread and the Youtube slow - Calgary center thread, so far they seem to be one-off issues affecting each person differently. We'd be happy to take a further look however and see if we can pinpoint what may be causing this issue for you. Please reply to my private message with your account information and i'll see what I can find out for you. Same goes for you meezohd!
Same issue here in Kamloops, BC.
More info on my DSL Reports thread.
Believe I haven't had a chance to look in to your issue as of yet, could you share with us your account info? I will send you a private message requesting this.
I am having the same problem. I'm in SW Edmonton, I have the 50 Mbps shaw internet and trying to watch 720p youtube videos is very painful, extremely slow to buffer and sometimes stalls out totally.
I've tried resetting the modem/router/pc, tried different browsers, tried on both a laptop and PC, nothing seems to help. My speed tests all come back fine, the problem seems to only be with youtube.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
Any updates on this?
I am seriously considering switching back to Telus over this massively annoying issue.
YouTube has been so terrible this week. Right now, I have a video streaming between 100-1200kbps. Way below what I should be getting.
Shaw, please take this issue seriously. My awesome experience with you in the past is being completely undone right now.
We are still looking in to it, the complaints seem to not be related to each other. I have been looking in to your situation and will send you a PM shortly.
I have the same problem in ShPk.
I have 50mbps service, but YouTube is useless to me at anything higher than 480p. I can download from other servers at the full-rate, it seems that YouTube may be being throttled or similar. I haven't tested with a VPN yet, but will soon.
Downtown on the 15mbps Shaw service it is better, but still nowhere near smooth.
I'm having a very similar issue is there any chance you could take a look at mine too, Ali?
It's been two weeks since I last heard back from Shaw. It doesn't seem like anyone is delving any deeper into this issue.
I have to buffer 480p videos right now, but at around midnight last night I was amazingly able to stream a 720p without buffering! It was almost as if I had my slower, cheaper, Telus connection again!
We're also having problems with youtube. Can not watch HD at all. It's loading very slow and it stops for re-buffering when playing. It does not buffer fast enough. Even 480p seems problematic. I have broadband 100, this is not acceptable. Speed tests shows 90Mbps. It seems that it's only youtube. Tried to reset modem, router, using LAN cable, wifi, nothing helps. It's the same for flash player or html5 youtube playback.
I'm located in Fort Saint John, BC.
Please help us get youtube working. Thanks.
I thought I'd try a couple different configurations to rule out external issues with the connection.
First, I tethered to my iPhone for internet, there was no issue. The video didn't buffer at all, and played from start to finish. And this is over a cellular 3G connection.
Second, I tried using YouTube through a VPN via Shaw. This resolved my issue completely.
Please fix this, it is terrible right now.
Again, I am in Sherwood Park.
I too have been having this issue for about 2.5 months now.
I can stream up to 420p fine. anything past that and it takes about 5 seconds per second of video..
I get the speeds I am paying for when downloading games off of steam/origin as well I do not have any issues streaming on netflix.
If i use a program like hotsop Shield it fixes all my issues with streaming on youtube, programs like steam and origin disconnect me when I use it. nor can I use sites like netflix while it is on.
For those who are tracking this thread, the following is a (edited) copy of my most recent correspondence w/ Shaw on the issue:
