Does anyone now why my PVR will randomly shut off and then restart? It can happen multiple times within in a day, it is very frustrating to be watching a show and all of a sudden it turns off and back on within a few seconds.
Overheating would by my first guess.
Software bug, try resetting it Online Activation for new Digital Terminals
Failing power supply - would need service call.
Is the system connected with HDMI cables? Sometimes HDMI cables will need to "handshake" to re-establish connection.
The hint for me is when you said that this happens for a few seconds. A full boot takes a minute or so, and an Overtemp will shut down the PVR untill the temp comes down. This leads me to think that it is not a power reset, but an intermittant connection issue. The results of a handshake will look very similar to a power reset on the TV screen, just for a shorter length of time.
Yeah, I missed the couple seconds. I suspect that it is the handshake issue now too.
I am having this exact same problem. Started yesterday. Weird coincidence... starting to think it is not one. Was there some kind of software/firmware update? My box will stay on for a bit, then shut down. It never receives channel information and all menu functions are disabled. "This service will return shortly" is what it says. I phoned the tech last night, No help there, just an appointment was scheduled.
The one moment please (is this the actual message you are getting), is a signal issue.
LOL. Now it will not even power on. When plugged in, the optic cable port is still receiving power. But that's the only sign of life. The cable signal itself works when directly plugged into the television.
Curious, are you trying to power it on with the remote? Or the buttons on the front? Have to ask... But yeah, if it won't power on, then will need a service call, how far away is it booked for?
I've tried the buttons on the front of the box itself, as well as both of my remotes. Also, tried unplugging the power cable, signal cable, etc. The service call is Sunday 11-1PM. I'm mystified that the optical port still lights up, but nothing else reacts. Weird, huh? If you have any suggestions feel free to shoot them my way.
If you unplug it, and plug it back in, what sequence of lights and such happen?
Does it flash 8888 for example?
When I initially posted in this thread, it would do that when it was turning off on it's own (and then back on). It does not do that anymore. There is absolutely nothing displayed when the power button is pushed currently. As noted before, the optical cable input jack is still lit and it does not react to the power button either. This only turns off when the power cable itself is disconnected.
When you plug it in, do you hear the hard-drive spin up?
I don't hear anything that sounds like an HD spin, more of a constant buzz like the 60Hz hum. If what I am listening for is a constant hum, yes. If I am to be hearing something else, no.
My guess is at this point, the power supply failed. When applying 12 volts to a hard drive, you should hear it start, and the gentle 'clicks' of it starting up, then it will just be spinning.
The 5 volts, might be ok (the optical port lit up). Might be 3.3 volts as well, so the 5 volts could be gone too, why everything doesn't work.
I was thinking maybe cold-boot it, but if you're not getting the hard drive spinning up, I don't think it is the software.
The 5 or 3.3 volts would explain why the optical is still active. I guess I will have to wait and see what the tech can do Sunday, and take it from there. Thanks for helping trouble shoot, though. I do appreciate that!
Did you by chance sign-up for Shaw friends when they were still offering life-time warranty?
Unfortunately, no. I am looking at my account right now and the benefit is, as you point out, gone. I did find a thread with people saying there is some confusion about the grandfather clause for those who did sign up prior to it being taken out of the package.
From what I understood, it is not showing, but people who signed up before the day it was removed, it is grand-fathered on the account.
