Thanks to the individual who responded to my original question and indicated that this port supports only an external IR emmitter, not an external IR receiver. Why would you want an external IR emmitter unless you were somehow using the Arris remote to control some device, other than the target TV or the Arris box, that is hidden from IR direct line of sight? It would seem far more useful and logical for the media player to support an external receiver (or both an emitter and receiver), so you can hide the media portal box, and then "hit" a small external receiver to control it. My guess is that the vast majority of installations would configured this way.
Finally, it appears that some of the IR to RF solutions that you can purchase to control a hidden portal box and that worked on the old Shaw boxes, do not work with the new Arris control.
