why the shaw internet speed is never up to par as i am paying for eg: i pay for high sperd 25 i only got 17.81Mbps download now no other devices connected except the one testing the speed can some one from shaw explain this please thanks in advance
I'd kill for 17.81 mbps... Try 2.09 mbps from 6pm to 12am..
I've been getting 2-8Mbps on my Broadband 50 between 8-12pm for the past week...
first off I would like to answer your question about not getting a full speed when performing a speed test. The best way to do a speed test is to make sure that the P.C you are doing your speed test on is directly connected to the modem not a router or wireless. Probably have done this already but with trouble shooting you still have to mention the obvious. Secondly Shaw's speeds they advertise and the speeds customers get are tow different things. The speeds they advertise are theoretical speeds (what they could give to if all the networking cables, modems, traffic, routing stations, switches, etc are a 100%) That will never happen, but if you are getting 85% to 90% you are golden!
If you have tested with just your computer hardwired to the modem and all programs like a P2P peer to peer, any video streaming programs like netflix or youtube are off and you are only getting 17Mbps then one thing I have seen and this happened to me once. Was believe it or not your antivirus slows down the speeds. I did a test running Kaspersky got like 50Mbps out of 100Mbps. Shut off the protection to JUST do a test then turned it back on and my test where up in the high 80's. So I would check that out and see if your antivirus is limiting your speeds.
thanks for your suggestions
will try that later
I'm just checking in to find out if you were able to see an improvement after trying vegetto420's suggestion of running a speed test with your computer directly to to the modem. Additional things to check can be found in How to troubleshoot slow Internet speeds. If none of this helps, please let me know, and I'll send you a direct message to check into this further.
I would love to get 17 Down. I am paying for Broadband 100 and between 6pm-1am, I am ranging from 0.5 - 3.0. It's okay though, cause I told shaw about this over 6 months ago and they know what the problem is. However, not a damn thing is being done about it and its getting worse. I see a cancellation in the near future.
