Syncing Mobile Device Mailboxes

I have set up custom mailboxes on my iPad and iPhone and they are reflected correctly in the webmail display. When I add items to a mailbox on my iPad it shows up in my iPhone mailbox and on the webmail mailbox. After a few days (4 or 5) it disappears from my mobile device mailboxes but is still showing in my webmail mailboxes. I don't understand why this happens. When I put mail into one of my own mailboxes I obviously want it to stay there. It does seem to stay there in the webmail mailbox of the same name but not on the mobile devices. Can anyone help me?
