Using gmail with a shaw.ca email address

I've begun to use gmail (because Webmail 2.0 is not adequate) while keeping my shaw.ca email address. I've set preferences in shaw to forward emails to my gmail account. When I'm in gmail and composing an email it allows me to select whether it's from the gmail address or the shaw address. So far so good. But when I send from gmail using the 'from shaw address' choice I often get the email bounced back with a message saying:

Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the relay mail.shaw.ca bymail.shaw.ca. [64.59.136.142].

Anyone know why this is happening? Or, more importantly, what to do about it? I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Bill
