In the last week I have suddenly started getting spam through my Shaw email. I've never had this before, and it is not even very well disguised spam; clearly junk. Have the filters changed?
We did move to a new spam filter a few weeks ago. But it's actually tougher than the old filtering system so isn't likely to be applicable in this case.
It's possible that a spammer got hold of your email address by trolling different websites or somehow accessing an email list. Best to notify us of the new spam so that we can add it to our spam list as per How to Report Spam and Adjust the Webmail Spam Filter.
I have the exact same problem. I haven't changed anything in my settings and have checked them they are OK.
I've gone from 6 - 12 spam emails being caught by Shaw's spam filter to zero. Started a couple of weeks ago.
Hi hjnicol. Your name might have been added to a spam list. I would recommend logging into Webmail and changing your spam filter to 'label message as spam and send to junk' to see how many that we are catching. And don't read those spam emails. Best not to let them know that you have an active email address.
Prior to this I didn't have a spam filter set up. It apparently was handled directly/automatically by Shaw.
Has that changed ?
I created the filter, named it label message, sent the results to "junk" it then asked me to complete another section where I select "To, From, Subject etc.." and then I'm to enter the what the subject contains. Since at the junk mail I'm was being "saved" from had in the title "[Shaw Suspect Junk Email]" I entered "Junk" as "contained" in the Subject.
Do you expect that will do it or am I doing something wrong ?
Shouldn't have been any changes on the back end. I would go into the Webmail spam settings and make sure that the spam settings are set to 'label message as spam and send to junk'. That way, you can still go in every now and then and make sure that there isn't anything in there that was mislabeled as spam.
In the "Spam" section, the only option is "When receiving Spam:" (and you pick where to send), I have, and always have had that set to "Label message as Spam and send to Junk"
To enter a name of a filter I have to go into the "Filters" section. Then in go into the subsection of "Incoming Message Filters"
Am I not in the correct area of Web Mail or something ?
Thank you for checking that! Our Spam filter can miss emails here and there. Are all the recent emails you have seen from the same person or have the same title? If you mark those emails as "Spam",
they shouldn't come through again.
You are right on the second half, to create a filter you do need to be in the "Filters" section. In the document Lance linked, you should see a section on that as you scroll down. However, try marking the emails as Spam first and then if that fails, then create filters.
Each email begins with [Shaw Suspected Junk Email]....
They are mostly different, but the ones I'm getting are the same type that used to get caught by the Shaw system filter.
I'd be happy if everything that your system identifies as "[Shaw Suspected Junk Email]" was filtered out.
It's like something happened on a particular day. I wasn't receiving much junk in my email program (Outlook). The filter in Outlook would take care of the 10% of the junk that got through Shaw's filter.
I'd get, perhaps 3 junk emails in Outlook, and 6 to 12 in Shawmail, every day.
Every day or two I'd check my Shawmail (vs my Outlook) and make sure there was nothing I wanted in the Shawmail "Junk" mail box and then delete the junk. The odd time there'd be something caught that shouldn't and I'd move it to my Shawmail In Box.
Now, I get nothing in my Junk folder in Shawmail and everything gets through to my Outlook.
I haven't bothered continuing to ask about this problem. For years about 95% of my spam has been picked up by the Shaw Spam filtering system, I was very satisfied with the system, then all of a sudden 0% spam getting caught.
My inquiries and the inquiries of others, "well yes we have a new system, but it's better than before....." "maybe YOU did something and YOU might have done this and YOU might have done that".
Well I tried changing, but I knew I hadn't not touched any Shaw setting and all of a sudden I was filtering spam at my end with MS Outlook and every day adding more address to my personal spam filter. Every time I checked my Shawmail account, unlike before this problem, I now had absolutely no spam in my Shaw Junk folder.
I gave up asking, all Shaw was doing was blaming me, "I must have done something".
Ocam's Razor, comes into play...... "The simplest explanation of a problem is likely the right one"
New Shaw system for filtering spam - Spam getting through 100% It's likely the Shaw system.
Now this morning ? Absolutely no spam in my MS Outlook. In my Shawmail ? ..... a couple dozen. I haven't changed any settings.
So what happened ? Somebody figure out the new great spam filter was set wrong and fixed it ?
Out spam filters are always being updated, especially with items that are reported as spam. It may seem that you are receiving more spam than you use to, however what you don't see is our spam filters do block around 90%-95% of spam before they even get to the mail servers.
[shaw]don - With all due respect, you are saying that it "seemed that I was receiving more" ???? Going from one or two a day, to 20 or more every day. Going from my Shawmail "Junk" folder containing 20 or more a day, to ZERO a week ?
A month or two ago, Shaw's spam filter would catch dozens of spam emails, and I would see them in the "Junk" email folder in my Shawmail. I could then check if an email I actually wanted (sometimes a Costco ad) was in the Shawmail "Junk" and I'd move it to the "In" box. During that time, in a "bad" week I'd have one or two get through to my Outlook email.
All of a sudden there were NO, ZERO, 0. spam emails in my Shawmail "Junk" folder and I had lots and lots in my Outlook, some days dozens.
I inquired and was told I must have done something, I should do this, I should do that. Nothing I did helped. Still the Shawmail spam filters picked up NO, ZERO, 0.0, junk emails. The Shawmail spam filters may have picked up some behind the scenes I have no idea, but the usual dozen or more a day that used to be deposited in my Shawmail "Junk" folder were not picked up and went through.
This morning, I had no junk mail in my Outlook, when I checked my Shawmail "Junk" folder, I had 20 or 30.
The vast majority of Junk that was getting through, during that time your filter wasn't working were prefaced with "[Shaw Suspected Junk Email]"
Something changed, I just hope it doesn't change back.
Why must Shaw employees ignore the concerns and explanations of customers. We are not all morons.
