When will we see Shaw get Fiber Internet, I think we have waited long enough, and atleast can we get better upload speed it is very low for what we pay.
Hi jcshoemay. We are expanding our fibre network, running new lines to communities that need it. But I think you are referring to Fibre to the Home where the final connection is by fibre rather than coaxial cable.
We are trialing it in many communities across our system and the number of new buildings connected by fibre is growing each year. But this is in new buildings where we can install the fibre network during the construction stage. When can we roll it out to existing buildings? No plans on that yet due to very high expense but I'm sure that in future years, we will see it.
Well, as a consumer you do really care what type of line is carrying your Internet? Probably not. You probably don't want fiber optic to the home, all you really want is faster speeds right? Possibly more bandwidth allocation per month?
Shaw could continue to use their Hybrid Fiber/Cable network and deploy DOCSIS 3.1 if they desired. This would allow them to deploy packages of up to 10 Gbps downstream and 1 Gbps upstream using their existing lines. Hardware on each end of the lines would need to be changed/upgraded but it's more than possible to get those speeds over the existing copper lines.
Heck, using the existing DOCSIS 3.0 we should be able to see up to 1 Gbps downstream and 200 Mbps upstream plans already.
They should do it soon though, as "fiber" is a huge buzzword right now and Telus is rolling out "fiber" Internet in Western Canada right now in a few cities.
I Agree that shaw doesn't necessarily need fibre right now since they can deploy docsis 3.1 and that should cover it for the next decades to come. But the issue is that even the current technology is not being utilized. Telus is now offering business fibre pro for example for 150$ per month with 100 Mbps download and 30 Mbps upload speed. Shaw is offering business 120 for 260$ per month but the upload is only 5 or 6 Mbps ?
Why did the new Shaw plans decreased the upload speed ? The upload speed for residential and business plans should at least triple or the plans are just not competitive. I like Shaw and have been a customer since 2006 but with these horrible upload speeds im afraid Telus will eat you guys for breakfast ( to the management out there ).
DOCSIS 3 barely covers it now, let alone for 'decades' to come. That's on the same level as the "640k outta be enough for anybody" comment, allegedly from Bill Gates
With streaming services of all kinds becoming a standard part of every day life, shaw is far behind the curve with it's standard connection options.
From a 'casual' usage perspective there are services like Netflix, or Shomi, along with multiple others such as Crackle.
There are game streaming services such as Nvidia's Shield service , whatever Sony named their playstation streaming thing, with others coming and going all the time. To get the most these services require the best an internet connect has to offer.
More communities large and small need to do what Olds did It's amazing how whenever a business such as Shaw or Telus get a good kick in the pants they become a magical internet utopia if only for a short time.
As for the upload speeds; Shaw has always had ridiculous upload speeds. Even some the ISP's considered to be the 'worst' in the US often have matching upload and download. If you get 20 down, you've got 20. If you've got 120 down, you've got 120 up. And whenever they've been challenged on it they provide a nonsense answer hoping that the person asking won't understand and just passively agree and drop the issue.
DOCSIS will be just fine, IMO

Shaw should roll it out to existing communities too. The competition is dong it and if Shaw doesn't, they are going to lose customers. We are talking about plans of up to 150 megabits now on "fiber" in Calgary but if the infrastructure can handle gigabit or ten gigabit, the provider that can turn that on is going to win out over the provider that can't.
I see a lot of money going to Shaw right now (specifically from me to Shaw in the form of a lot of money per month) and I expect some of that to turn into investment which will create faster and more reliable internet. Don't fall asleep.
Waiting and watching to see if Fibre cable will be pulled into our area V8L 3Z3. North Saanich B.C.
Telus are pulling FO cable here as we speak.
Must consider all options.
Our strata corporation in Abbotsford, BC is taking a vote this month, January 2017, on whether to allow Telus to install (free of charge) fibre optics. If the vote is in favour, this shouldn't affect us loyal Shaw customers but it would be nice to see Shaw taking a proactive approach. I am not well informed on the technology and wouldn't mind some feedback on this.
