Why does Shaw disable the USB ports on its routers? It would be very useful to have an external drive from anywhere on my network.
The USB connection on our wireless modems is indeed disabled. On our wired modems, there is a USB port as an alternative to ethernet (with appropriate drivers). There is actually little technical documentation which shows information on the USB port on our Cisco and SMC wireless modems. It may be able to be used for other purposes such as for network attached storage devices, but it remains disabled at the moment. I'll try to find out more for you.
dfr you are correct in what the port is used for, why it is disabled, I have a few guesses, but just guesses...
Four months have gone by, and I now have a Netgear N600 router. It also has a USB port that is disabled. You said you would "try to find out more" about this policy. Have you been able to make any progress on that?
I'm sorry for the lack of update on this thread here about the USB port on our modems. After checking with several departments, unfortunately I didn't find anything on this other than that we don't have any plans to make use of it in the near future.
I'm not sure why the USB port would be disabled on your N600 though. From what I've read, it should be enabled and looks like it can be used for network attached storage drives. It shows it's available on the product page: http://www.netgear.com/home/products/wirelessrouters/high-performance/wndr3700.aspx. You might want to check their support section at http://support.netgear.com.
Thanks for that help. I went to the product page as you suggested, and set up the ReadyShare on my Mac. It seems to be working fine. The software assigned the name "USB Storage" to that drive, and I can't figure out how to change that name to something more informative. Any suggestions?
I should tell you that, in a Concierge session earlier today with one of your colleagues, he told me that that USB was de-activated on the Netgear router. I'm glad I got to you, and I hope you'll spread the information to others at your end.
You get a gold star!
Glad I could help dfr. I searched, but unfortunately I couldn't find anything on changing the name from USB Storage to something else in ReadyShare. Maybe someone else has used this software before and can help. This will bump your thread.
