ok how do you set up an imap acct - the shaw support info for Yosemite does not work...
Hi cdtuck ,
We have instructions for setting up email here Apple OS X Mail, which includes some troubleshooting steps for Yosemite users. Please give that a try, and if it doesn't work, let us know what type of error you receive. You can also try checking in with our chat support team as they have the ability to access your desktop and check the settings for you.
Hi Tamara - your online help is for YOSEMITE - OS X 10.10., which no longer works if you have upgraded to ElCapitan - OS X 10.11. Shaw support could not help - said "I guess we don't support that OS yet..." Got the same basic answer from Apple support.
Are the Shaw techies working on this? I hope so because POP is a pain when you have five devices accessing one acct...
I looked online at the upgrades in El Capitan, including at the Apple site itself at OS X - What’s New - Apple.
Looks like some good upgrades with the new Mac Mail. It now allows you to minimize the compose window so that you can go back to the mailboxes and to have multiple messages show up as separate tabs. I read on one site that the new IMAP protocols in El Capitan should allow you to download at 1.5 the speed of Yosemite.
But I'm not seeing anything on the difference in the settings between Yosemite and El Capitan. If any El Capitan aficionados out there are able to give us any screenshots of differences in those settings, we would be happy to look into this further.
It seems that OSX 10.11 is autodetecting from the mail server, and shaw responds with the POP information. Any idea how to get it to detect the IMAP information? I'll ask about 100% manual IMAP setting on the apple forums and post anything that works.
Did you try un checking the first box above in your mail preferences?
So... has anyone actually gotten imap to work for a Shaw account in OSX 10.11 Mail or not?
Same problem here; the Yosemite settings don't work:
Holding down the 'option' key does NOT produce an imap entry dialog box. Continuing produces a POP account rather than an imap account.
@buckycat: Do you now have a working imap mail account? It seems you can't get to that screen in mail preferences until you have an account, and then it's too late -- it's already a POP account.
@Lance: do you still want screen shots?
Screen shots would be great, thanks.
Have you tried this? When you go to create an account, enter your email address incorrectly (for example firstname.lastname@example.org) and see if the next screen prompts you with the type of account you'd like to set up. I don't have access to El Capitan here at the moment, but I've checked Chasms and it appears this dialog may come up if your information is entered incorrectly when first entering your email address and password.

It worked! Thanks for the tip. There really needs to be a page with clear instructions for this setup, as this fix is a 'kluge'.
Nice! Glad that did it.
Agreed there should be updated instructions and this is currently in the works. We should have more specific information for El Capitan soon.
Finally got around to trying the fake address and it worked like a charm. Thanks to all for your help.
