Hello, I have been trying to watch netflix through my bluray player, but it often cuts out. Is this because my shaw router is not in the same room as the TV?
Maybe... Wired or wireless to your Bluray?
Try doing a speed test here.
Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test
I stream Netflix wirelessly no problem to my Bluray and PS3 with my router a floor down.
If you have any other WiFi connections to your network, try turning them of. It might be network congestion.
If you are using a Shaw wireless modem, and Netflix through your Bluray player seems to be experiencing disconnections, you may be able to improve the wireless signal to your Bluray by adjusting the wireless channel on your modem, as outlined in the following support article How to Change the Wireless Channel on Your Shaw Wireless Modem.
Please let me know if this does not help (or if you are using a different wireless router). It would also be useful to know if you have other computers/devices connecting wirelessly in your home, and if they are experiencing similar disconnections or slow internet speed. If you have a laptop with wireless, you can try moving this near the Bluray and run a speed test from your laptop, to see if the location of your Bluray may be part of the problem.
