I'm trying to setup the syslog alert but obviously am doing something wrong.
Are you able to advise what should be filled into the various sections?
Do you have a syslog server running somewhere?
Or are you trying to setup sending email alerts?
Kevinds - I'm trying to setup sending email alerts. I don't have a syslog server running.
Just wanted to be clear on what you were trying to do
Sender's email address, whatever email address you want them to appear to come from
firstname.lastname@example.org will work, or your email address - anything as long as it looks like an email address
Username/Password - leave blank
Recipient List - Add
And then enter the email address you want the alerts to go to. Can you post a screenshot of what changes after you click add?
Then save/submit. Should be all you need.
As you can see from the snapshot below I'm getting an error message. I used the SMTP address from my email account. Should I be using a different server address? Thanks for any help you are able to provide. Cheers
I really hate to make my next suggestion, but it will work for a test...
For the SMTP Server
Hmmmm...doesn't seem to like that one either.
Also try IE or Firefox to be complete with testing?
Edit: Doh! Uncheck send Syslog! You don't have a Syslog server entered.
Thanks for your patience.I tried your latest IP address, unchecked "send syslog" and continue to receive an error message saying " the server name doesn't seem to be valid". My most recent test was with IE as I was using Chrome before. Note - I receive the error message even when "send email" is not checked.
Humm... I know Send Syslog needs to be unchecked, because you wern't using one, because you were telling the SMC to send a Syslog message but no Syslog server, I was thinking that was where the error was coming from.
Go back to using the shawmail.rd.shawcable.net email server
Enter the same for the Syslog server?
But only have Send Email checked.
OK - that appears to have worked [ no error messages ].I tired login [using wrong info - several times] but have not received any email warning me of failed login's. Maybe I'm expecting too much!
Thanks for your help Kevinds
Try setting up a syslog server?
Part of my issue might be I have no way to test if this connection is working. The modem manual suggests an email would be sent when "intrusion is detected". I suspect a simple login failure might not qualify as "intrusion".
Can you point me toward directions on how to set up a syslog server? Thanks again for your patience and assistance.
