I did try but it keeps wanting to update the guide....wait wait wait.....
Hi gordn. I have a bit of a qualified answer for you -
If you hook up your old PVR, you can watch the recordings. But... the PVR must be active on your account. If it was removed from active status (or if you're connecting it at someone else's house), our servers won't be able to send to it the proper information, including information on the guide.
Can I activate it even if I don't plan to really use it other than catching up with some left over shows?
Yes, but if you leave it unplugged for a long enough time (usually 3 months or so) Shaw will deactivate it in their system again.
Yeah, Shaw's PVRs require an active subscription when booting to view the PVR saved items.. This came as a surprise to me.
If you are still a customer, just reactivate the PVR.. If you disconnect the cable line after activating, it will stay working for as long as it is powered on.
Example.. If you are in the middle of a power outage but run your home with a generator (or other power source), if the Shaw signal is out when the PVR is powered back on, it won't work. If connected to a UPS before the generator powers your home, it will stay working...
No idea the reason behind it (channel licensing maybe?) but other Canadian satellite TV provider, can work without a signal. Not sure on Shaw Direct though. Haven't had an opportunity to test different scenarios yet.
