How can I change my IP?
I have a SurfBoard SBG6782
I want to get my public IP changed somehow..
Hey there fuzzehy,
Thanks for reaching out! With Internet service through Shaw, you are provided a dynamic IP address. This IP address may change from time to time when we do work to our network, etc, but unfortunately cannot be easily changed at will.
If you require a new IP address, you may have to leave your modem completely powered down for quite some time, and if your IP address gets leased to another modem, then you will be provided with a new one. I'd say try this for a solid 48 hours if you're able to. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee that this will work, but it's worth a shot if you have a period of time that you will not be using the internet.
My first question is why do you need to? There are very few good reasons for needing a different IP.
Basic answer is change the device requesting the IP. Change the router for example.
Thay being said, the SB6782 doesn't have a bridge mode or pass-through option to change the router.
Get Shaw to upgrade you to one of the newer, more advanced modems perhaps. Or 'downgrade' to the DPC3825.
Ideally if you want advanced options like this you will want to get a modem you can have bridged and use your own private router. Get something you can flash with DD-WRT or a machine you can install PFsense on and you will have the option in either configuration to change your MAC address. Shaw's system leases based on MAC address.... you change it, you get a new IP (after you reboot your modem).
[shaw]brayden 's solution will work. however you do need to leave the modem off long enough for someone else to lease your old IP address. If you use the above method all you need to do is change the MAC address on your router and reboot the Shaw modem, the IP will change on its restart.
