Now that Telus is offering a 4k PVR when can we expect Shaw to offer one?
Good question! We haven't had any updates on when we this will be available, but we do have an information page here 4K TV Service Explained and once we get any new info it will be added there. Thanks!
Frankly, Shaw still does not provide many of the HD (720p, 1080i) channels currently available in Canada, most of which are offered by competitors. It is so far behind Telus, Bell, even small providers, in HD that adding 4k seems disingenuous. No amount of asking, pleading, begging, jousting with Shaw seems to work. All we get is "fill in the channel request form" (really just a black hole). I even wonder sometimes if Shaw execs instead of using Shaw cable for home viewing, actually purchase competitors' products for themselves, given the deficiencies of their own.
I was an employee a few moons ago (for a Shaw company) and the only Shaw product I subscribed to was TV, because it was slightly less compressed than the alternative providers. Internet, I would never have dreamed of using Shaw's product as the competition was fibre and rock solid. It was very frustrating, both as an employee and as a customer, to see such a total lack of innovation and absolutely zero interest in trying.
I have to say, I'm very disappointed in Shaw for not offering 4k as Telus is.
Why? There's no 4K channels, no 4K on demand. Right now, 4K is really just a sales ploy to get people buying new TVs that they don't even need. HD channels aren't even broadcasting in 1080P. Yes, Rogers is offering 4K Blue Jays home games, but only to a small market in Toronto.
Telus is smart enough to know that customers will want to watch the 2016 Olympic Games in 4k. They have a month's time to prepare.
Opps, try again. Looks like the Olympics won't be in 4K here in Canada.
4K broadcasts take a hit from sporting woes | WYT - Canadian Tech News & Tech Reviews
"Somewhat surprisingly, the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro will not be getting 4K broadcasts."
Somebody better tell Telus that there will be no Olympics in 4K as they are promoting it on their website.
On the contrary, TELUS has dedicated channels for Rio 4K events. Opening/Closing ceremonies, as well as many of the main events will be in 4K. The channels appear to be branded as CBC, as they currently have a still graphic with both the CBC and Rio logo as placeholders. I, personally, can't wait. 22 Mbps 4K HEVC awesomeness.
Still sticking with no Olympics in 4K?
Apparently they have changed this in the time since my link was posted.
Still not worth it for the 18 days that the Olympics are on. They need to get at least a majority of channels up to broadcasting in 1080P before they sweat about 4K.
