Change To 3rd Party DNS

I have a Hitron CGNM-2250 router/modem. I've tried to change my DNS server by entering the appropriate IP addresses in Windows Network and Sharing settings, which didn't seem to work. So I went into the router settings, changed DNS assignment to manual, entered the addresses there, rebooted the router and the computer, but tracert seemed to indicate that it still wasn't working. I then discovered that the DNS addresses the router is using are contained in Wan setup. But when I changed the DNS addresses there and tried to save I got an error message saying that the WAN IP address and the gateway address aren't in the same subnet, even though I didn't change either address, only the DNS servers. Does anyone know how to resolve this ? Thanks in advance.
