I'm have your lowest Internet service, but playing online is lagging, for example Star Wars the Old Republic seems to lag when I play.
also when I play Videos online it lags as well.
If you run a speedtest at www.speedtest.shaw.ca do the results lineup with your Internet subscription? How many other users also use the connection? If someone is uploading something large via iCloud or Dropbox, for example, while you are gaming/streaming then it could impact your performance.
Well I still have problems online playing Star Wars Old Republic online, I've got a HP Pavilion 23 all in one computer.

My son reports the same problem when playing the online game World Of Tanks. This game uses both TCP and UDP ports, the latter for the actual live gaming action. We currently have the Hitron-CGNM-2250 cable modem on the Internet 75 package. To troubleshoot the problem we connected to a VPN service in Chicago where the World of Tanks server is physically located. Looking at the image below we can see the latency around 83ms.
Now we connect to the WOT server without the aid of a VPN service and we connect with a latency around 116ms. See
In the gaming world this is a huge difference. One of suspicions we draw from this is that Shaw is using "Deep Packet Inspection" to throttle the UDP traffic as it is the same protocol used by bitttorent software, resulting in higher latency as their software scans the packets and slows down the connection. We have done the Shaw speedtest multiple times and the quoted latency is around 50ms. I suspect this speedtest is using TCP ports only, not the UDP ports used by most online games. If someone from Shaw can pipe up and state this is not the case, then what is causing the discrepancy in the latency.

Would you be able to provide a Trace Route to their server, once with and once without VPN enabled? It is possible that the VPN is allowing it to go through a different route to the server, rather than the route we have setup with our network peering partners.
To clarify shaw-phil's comment, routes are not set up, but are learned dynamically using BGP (Border Gateway Protocol), the Internet's routing protocol. The server's ISP/network provider will advertise out their network to the networks they connect to, and those routes will propagate across networks on the internet until Shaw receives them (either directly via peering, or indirectly via a different peer or a transit network). BGP will then use its parameters and algorithms to forward your packets on towards another router, closer to the destination, until the last router it on the same local network at the server.
As every router makes this forwarding decision independently, changing any router you move through on the internet (for example, using a VPN and coming out of one of their gateway servers and into one of their routers) can drastically change the route your packets take.
As the internet is dynamic, the route your packets take can change at any time, or sometimes packets in a stream can take multiple routes between host and server.
